Department Overview - Investment Accounting
The Investment Accounting team oversees the end‑to‑end accounting, reporting, and governance of a large, multi‑asset investment portfolio. These holdings include fixed income securities, equity investments, structured products, private capital funds, derivatives, and various lending portfolios. The group plays a critical role in ensuring financial data integrity, implementing new accounting guidance, maintaining a controlled reporting environment, and supporting both internal and external stakeholders.
Core responsibilities of the department include:
- Reconciling sub-ledger and transaction activity to the general ledger
- Preparing and reviewing investment-related disclosures for GAAP and statutory reporting
- Managing accounting for new investment structures and products
- Supporting audits, regulatory filings, and internal control requirements
- Evaluating and implementing new accounting policies and systems related to investment data
Role Responsibilities
- Lead and execute monthly and quarterly investment accounting close processes, ensuring accuracy and completeness across multiple legal entities.
- Prepare and review financial disclosures related to investments, including GAAP footnotes, fair value reporting, variable interest entities, lending disclosures, and MD&A-related analytics.
- Support the preparation of statutory investment schedules and other regulatory reporting requirements.
- Drive process improvements and automation efforts across investment accounting operations in partnership with cross-functional teams.
- Serve as a primary resource for controllers, business unit finance teams, and investment operations on technical accounting matters.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand new investment structures and ensure appropriate accounting treatment and system setup.
- Provide analytical insights and respond to ad-hoc requests related to investment results, trends, and variances.
- Participate in initiatives involving new accounting standards, system enhancements, or platform upgrades affecting investment data.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in investment accounting, financial reporting, or a similar technical accounting role.
- Strong understanding of investment products, including fixed maturity securities, equities, alternative investments, and other structured financial instruments.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP as it relates to investments and the preparation of relevant journal entries and disclosures.
- Experience preparing or reviewing statutory investment schedules and related regulatory filings.
- Familiarity with foreign currency translation, remeasurement, and related accounting concepts.
- Strong analytical abilities with experience preparing written commentary and reviewing complex workpapers.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, advanced formulas, and data analysis techniques.
- Experience collaborating with teams across multiple locations and functions.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and apply strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to improving processes, strengthening controls, and maintaining high-quality financial outcomes.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and effectively communicate with teams at all levels.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with investment accounting systems or data platforms is preferred.
- Experience with tools such as PAM or Aladdin is beneficial but not required.
