Commodities Technology Engineer
About the Role
A leading multi-strategy hedge fund is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Commodities Operations Technology team in New York. This team manages and owns the firm's internal Energy Trading Risk Management (ETRM) platform-critical infrastructure that supports the entire lifecycle of energy and commodity trading. The role focuses on maintaining and enhancing core systems that power energy trading workflows and integrating them with other enterprise tools.
Unlike highly specialized hedge fund engineering roles, this position does not require an extremely high technical bar or deep financial engineering experience. Instead, it calls for strong systems knowledge, data integration expertise, and the ability to work at the intersection of software engineering and business operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own and manage the internal ETRM system, ensuring stability, scalability, and integration with other platforms.
- Collaborate with trading, risk, and operations teams to support energy and commodity workflows.
- Design and implement solutions for data integration, messaging, and reporting.
- Work with messaging protocols (Kafka, RabbitMQ) to enable real-time communication across systems.
- Partner with stakeholders to streamline processes and enhance operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, systems integration, or data engineering.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for data workflows and automation.
- Familiarity with messaging frameworks such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Experience with ETRM/CTRM platforms (Endur, Allegro, Murex) or similar systems is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of energy and commodity markets.
- Exposure to distributed systems and performance optimization.
- Understanding of APIs, data pipelines, and integration with ERP or risk systems.
