Senior Individual Life Underwriter (Underwriter IV)

A leading life insurance organization is seeking a highly experienced Senior Individual Life Underwriter to support complex, high‑impact individual life cases. This role is designed for an underwriter who thrives in complexity, exercises strong independent judgment, and serves as a trusted technical partner to the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently underwrite highly complex individual life insurance cases, including formal applications and pre‑quote requests, with approval authority of $5MM+
  • Evaluate significant mortality and financial risk using advanced medical, financial, and actuarial judgment
  • Provide expert guidance on cases exceeding the authority of junior underwriters
  • Review and approve underwriting decisions made by other underwriters to ensure alignment with guidelines, selection standards, and risk philosophy
  • Partner closely with agents, brokers, and field leadership, clearly communicating underwriting decisions and rationale
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor to underwriting staff
  • Contribute to underwriting best practices, guideline development, and workflow quality initiatives
  • Stay current on products, regulations, and industry trends impacting underwriting decisions

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in individual life underwriting, including impaired risks and large‑case underwriting
  • 5+ years of life underwriting experience with demonstrated success operating at full authority levels
  • Proven ability to make and defend complex underwriting decisions under pressure
  • Strong technical underwriting foundation, including completion of LOMA 280/281, 290, 311, 386, and ALU 101 & 201, or equivalent depth of knowledge
  • Excellent analytical, decision‑making, and communication skills
  • High level of independence, accountability, and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage competing priorities while meeting deadlines
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and curious working environment

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
  • FLMI, FALU, or CLU designation completed or in progress
  • Experience with Accelerated Underwriting programs and/or Long‑Term Care underwriting
  • Prior involvement in field training, underwriting policy development, or special underwriting initiatives
