Data Analytics Engineer - Chicago, Illinois

Opportunity with a Quantitative Sports Betting Firm

We're seeking a meticulous, SQL‑savvy and Python‑capable data specialist who lives for understanding data: where it comes from, how it's structured, why it's built that way, and how to help others use it effectively. This role is not software engineering - it's for someone who thrives on mastering data ecosystems and enabling others to navigate them.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary resource for quantitative researchers needing guidance on data access - pointing them to the right sources, crafting sample SQL queries and exploratory notebooks, and developing shared tools that streamline data retrieval.
  • Own the documentation and organization of our data assets, including table definitions, relationships, usage patterns, and naming conventions aligned with downstream workflows.
  • Maintain and enhance data pipelines by writing, updating, and monitoring the code that ingests, cleans, transforms, and transports data across systems.
  • Collaborate with DevOps to implement improvements in data storage, accessibility, and reliability.

What We're Looking For

  • A structured, analytical thinker who instinctively considers primary keys, data types, and schema relationships
  • Strong ability to map, document, and explain data environments across multiple systems
  • Solid SQL proficiency, with a real understanding of performance and query optimization
  • Experience using Python (or similar) for data processing, transformation, and pipeline development
  • Familiarity with orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow) and the ability to maintain scheduled jobs
  • Excellent communication skills for bridging technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Dependable availability and follow-through

Nice to Have

  • Experience in data-heavy fields (finance, sports, ad tech, etc.)
  • Exposure to columnar or analytical databases
  • Background in schema design or data modeling
  • Ability to leverage AI tools to improve internal data discovery and querying
