Benefits Consultant
Position Overview
The Benefits Consultant is responsible for managing client relationships and delivering comprehensive employee benefits solutions within a brokerage environment. This role serves as the day-to-day strategic and technical advisor to clients, supporting the development, implementation, and ongoing management of health & welfare programs.
The Benefits Consultant partners closely with internal service teams, carriers, and vendors to ensure seamless execution, while contributing to client retention and growth.
Key Responsibilities
Client Management & Advisory
- Serve as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of employee benefits clients (typically mid-market organizations)
- Advise clients on benefit plan design, funding strategies, and cost-containment approaches
- Lead renewal process, including strategy development, underwriting review, and carrier negotiations
- Deliver benchmarking analysis and market insights to inform client decision-making
- Support clients in addressing employee benefits challenges, including cost trends, utilization, and engagement
Vendor & Carrier Management
- Market benefit programs to carriers and vendors to obtain competitive proposals
- Evaluate plan options, pricing, and service offerings from insurers and third-party administrators
- Present recommendations and guide clients through final vendor selection
- Manage ongoing carrier relationships to ensure service delivery and issue resolution
Financial & Analytical Support
- Analyze claims data, utilization trends, and financial projections
- Develop and present cost analyses, renewal projections, and funding comparisons (fully insured, level-funded, self-funded)
- Identify savings opportunities and risk management strategies
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of all financial reporting
Project Management & Execution
- Coordinate with internal account management and service teams to ensure timely delivery of client services
- Oversee implementation of new or revised benefit programs
- Manage key client deliverables including open enrollment strategy, employee communications, and compliance support
- Track timelines, deliverables, and client requests to maintain high service standards
Business Development & Growth
- Support producer/sales team in prospecting and new business opportunities
- Participate in finalist meetings, proposals, and RFP responses
- Identify cross-sell opportunities (e.g., wellness, voluntary benefits, compliance, retirement)
- Contribute to client retention through strong relationship management and service excellence
Compliance & Industry Knowledge
- Maintain working knowledge of relevant regulations (ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA)
- Assist clients in navigating benefits compliance requirements and changes in legislation
- Stay current on market trends, emerging vendors, and innovative benefit solutions
Qualifications
Required
- 5-10+ years of experience in employee benefits consulting or brokerage
- Experience managing client relationships and leading renewals
- Strong understanding of health & welfare plans (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy)
- Financial acumen and experience analyzing claims and underwriting data
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
Preferred
- Experience working with mid-market or large group clients
- Producer's license (or ability to obtain)
- Industry certifications such as CEBS or similar
- Exposure to self-funded plans and alternative funding strategies
