Role Overview
A rapidly expanding energy‑trading business is scaling its power‑market technology footprint to support a growing portfolio of generation and storage assets. As the company integrates more renewable and dispatchable resources and expands participation across multiple markets, the need for highly reliable operational systems and automated dispatch processes has increased significantly.
Within this environment, the SCADA & Generation Systems team plays a central role in ensuring that trading, operations, and asset‑management groups have the real‑time visibility and control required to support short‑term power operations.
The Lead SCADA & Generation Systems Engineer will guide the buildout and operation of the organization's internal control, dispatch, and telemetry systems, ensuring stable and secure connectivity between energy assets, operational technology, and trading platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Coordination
- Provide technical and strategic leadership for the SCADA engineering function, creating a collaborative, reliable, and high‑performance team environment.
- Oversee reporting and communication for ongoing projects, system performance, and operational risks for senior technology and business leadership.
- Partner with asset operations, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, trading, and external technical groups to ensure alignment on priorities and system requirements.
- Facilitate cross‑team integration efforts between operational systems and trading‑related applications, ensuring data quality, timeliness, and reliability.
- Lead recurring touchpoints to track progress, mitigate risks, and promote best practices across SCADA and operations engineering.
- Remain informed about emerging technologies, industry trends, and market developments to inform future enhancements to the platform.
SCADA & Generation Systems Engineering
- Act as the primary subject‑matter authority on SCADA and related generation‑management platforms, advising both technology and business users.
- Design and implement secure, scalable connectivity between operational assets and enterprise systems, ensuring reliable telemetry, control, and dispatch operations.
- Coordinate new‑asset onboarding, including validation, data‑mapping, communication workflows, and integration across different regional markets and service territories.
- Support the adoption or transition of dispatch technologies, collaborating with external vendors and third‑party service providers where needed.
- Ensure adherence to cybersecurity and operational‑technology standards, including compliance frameworks commonly applied to power‑sector environments.
- Shape the broader system architecture to ensure effective integration between operational systems and upstream trading, scheduling, and analytics tools.
- Maintain documentation across technical design, protocols, onboarding procedures, and operational playbooks.
- Monitor platform performance, conduct troubleshooting, and drive corrective actions to maintain high availability and operational resilience, including participation in an international or multi‑region on‑call rotation.
- Build dashboards, metrics, alarms, and visualizations within dispatch and monitoring systems to enhance situational awareness for operations and scheduling teams.
- Coordinate with integrators, external engineering teams, and software vendors to support system implementations and long‑term sustainment.
Core Accountabilities
- Deliver secure, resilient, and high‑quality SCADA and generation‑management capabilities supporting asset dispatch and short‑term power operations.
- Architect systems with robust cybersecurity controls, high reliability, and strong compliance posture.
- Ensure the quality, accuracy, and reliability of deliverables produced by internal teams and external partners.
- Provide expert operational support and drive ongoing improvements across tools, processes, and system capabilities.
- Maintain transparent communication regarding progress, operational risks, system health, and strategic priorities.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- 8+ years of experience within power generation, utilities, energy trading, or grid‑operations environments.
- Deep understanding of real‑time power‑market operations, including scheduling, dispatch, optimization, and asset‑management workflows-experience with ISO/RTO markets strongly preferred.
- Hands‑on experience with SCADA platforms (such as Monarch/OSI, GE, Hitachi, or similar industrial‑control systems) and generation‑management tools.
- Knowledge of common energy‑sector communication protocols (e.g., ICCP, Modbus, OPC, DNP3, IEC‑104) and asset‑integration processes.
- Strong familiarity with networking fundamentals and secure operational‑technology connectivity.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse business and technical stakeholders.
- Proven track record troubleshooting real‑time operational systems and resolving SCADA/OT issues under time‑sensitive conditions.
- Awareness of regulatory standards and industry best practices related to grid operations, cybersecurity, and energy‑asset management.
- Certifications in IT service management, project delivery, Agile practices, cloud platforms, or data systems are advantageous.
- Prior experience leading technical teams or mentoring engineering personnel.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, information systems, or a related field.
