Overview
We are partnered with a high growth private credit firm in the New York City area that has completed multiple acquisitions and is continuing to scale rapidly. The firm is looking for an established Controller with private credit and hedge fund experience who can work in tandem with the Head of Accounting to strengthen the control environment, enhance reporting, and build a scalable finance function to support continued growth. Experience with specialty finance is a plus. This is a hands on leadership role suited for someone who thrives in an entrepreneurial, high ownership environment and can drive process improvement while maintaining strong technical accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner closely with the Head of Accounting to run day to day accounting operations and scale processes as the platform grows
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including review of journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement packages
- Maintain oversight of the general ledger, financial reporting, and the integrity of books and records across the platform
- Coordinate external audits and serve as the primary point of contact for auditors and other external partners
- Lead the development, documentation, and implementation of accounting policies, internal controls, and new processes to support acquisitions and growth
- Oversee fund and investment accounting activities relevant to private credit strategies, including loan level activity, interest accruals, fee income, and portfolio reporting
- Support valuation and reporting cycles by partnering with internal teams and external valuation resources as needed
- Manage cash and liquidity oversight in partnership with treasury, including cash forecasting and approval workflows
- Oversee payroll processes and ensure accurate tax reporting, reconciliations, and compliance requirements
- Drive operational improvements, including systems optimization, workflow automation, and standardization of reporting and close procedures
- Provide leadership and development for accounting staff, including review, coaching, and performance management
- Support integration efforts for new acquisitions, including accounting alignment, process mapping, and reporting consolidation
Core Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 7 plus years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful exposure to private credit and hedge fund environments
- Prior experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or lead accounting capacity within private credit, alternative asset management, specialty finance, or a complex financial services environment
- Strong GAAP knowledge and hands on financial reporting experience
- CPA strongly preferred
- Demonstrated management experience with the ability to lead, develop, and scale a team
- Advanced Excel and strong proficiency across Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across investment, operations, tax, and senior leadership stakeholders
