Position Summary

The Underwriting Director - Hospitals will lead the management, analysis, and strategic oversight of a complex risk portfolio for small to mid-sized hospitals and healthcare organizations. This role plays a key part in shaping underwriting strategy while also serving as a people leader, guiding a team of skilled underwriters toward operational excellence and long-term portfolio growth.


Key Responsibilities

Relationship & Business Development

  • Build and strengthen relationships with key distribution partners to drive new business and support renewal strategies that align with the organization's risk appetite.
  • Achieve new business goals within the hospital and excess product segments.

Portfolio & Performance Management

  • Maintain and enhance profitability and growth of the hospital and excess portfolio by evaluating risk tolerance, market trends, and emerging risk issues.
  • Conduct ongoing financial and operational analyses-covering rates, planning, and product reviews-to assess progress toward underwriting goals and present results to senior leadership.
  • Develop and execute both short- and long-term strategic plans and budgets that support profitable organic growth.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and mentor a team of underwriters with MPL and some HPL experience, providing opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement.

Program Innovation & Compliance

  • Identify gaps and opportunities within current underwriting programs and recommend improvements to senior management.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting filings and maintain thorough supporting documentation.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
  • 10+ years of underwriting experience, including at least 5 years in hospital liability/excess lines
  • Proven leadership capability; prior management experience preferred
  • Professional designations such as CPCU or RPLU are a plus
  • Deep understanding of underwriting principles and insurance policy structures
  • Exceptional written communication skills, capable of producing clear and concise reports and referrals
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to present effectively to audiences of all sizes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and adapt to change quickly
  • Highly developed planning, time management, and prioritization skills
  • Commitment to customer service and thriving in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
