Head of Market Risk & Counterparty Oversight
We are currently working with the Chief Market Risk Officer, of a growing bank who is looking to bring on executive leader to run his Counterparty & Market Risk Oversight team. This is a senior leadership role responsible for the independent oversight of counterparty credit risk and market risk exposures across the firm. This individual will lead the development and execution of risk frameworks, policies, and governance structures to ensure effective identification, measurement, monitoring, and control of these risks. The role requires close collaboration with front office, risk analytics, compliance, and regulatory teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership:
- Lead the firm's counterparty and market risk oversight strategy, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and internal risk appetite.
- Serve as a senior advisor to executive leadership on emerging risk trends and exposures.
- Risk Oversight & Governance:
- Oversee the independent assessment of counterparty credit risk and market risk across trading, investment, and financing activities.
- Develop and maintain risk policies, limits, and escalation protocols.
- Chair or participate in relevant risk committees and working groups.
- Analytics & Reporting:
- Ensure robust risk measurement methodologies (e.g., VaR, stress testing, exposure modeling) are in place and independently validated.
- Oversee the production of high-quality risk reports for senior management, board, and regulators.
- Monitor market conditions and counterparties for early warning indicators.
- Regulatory & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., Basel III/IV, Dodd-Frank, EMIR, FRTB).
- Lead or support regulatory examinations and internal audits related to market and counterparty risk.
- Team Leadership:
- Build and manage a high-performing team of risk professionals.
- Foster a culture of risk awareness, integrity, and continuous improvement.
- Reporting directly to the Chief Market Risk Officer (CMRO), this is a high-visibility role with exposure to senior leadership, including the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and Treasurer.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or a related field; CFA, FRM, or similar certification preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in market and/or counterparty risk management
- Deep understanding of financial products (e.g., derivatives, fixed income, equities, structured products).
- Strong knowledge of risk modeling, stress testing, and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven leadership and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with risk systems (e.g., Murex, Calypso, Bloomberg, RiskMetrics).
- Familiarity with quantitative risk modeling and programming tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
- Global market experience and understanding of cross-border regulatory environments.
