Excess Casualty Underwriter
We are seeking a skilled Excess Casualty Underwriter to join a growing and highly collaborative underwriting team. This role is ideal for an underwriter who thrives in a fast-moving environment, enjoys complex risk evaluation, and is motivated by building strong broker relationships. The ideal candidate has a strong technical foundation in casualty underwriting and experience handling middle-market or large-account risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate, price, and underwrite new and renewal excess casualty business within delegated authority.
- Analyze loss history, exposure data, financials, operations, and risk characteristics to make sound underwriting decisions.
- Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with wholesale and retail brokers while maintaining profitability and portfolio objectives.
- Develop and maintain strong broker relationships across the Midwest region, with a focus on expanding market presence in Chicago.
- Collaborate with internal teams-including actuarial, claims, and underwriting leadership-to ensure alignment with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Monitor industry trends, emerging exposures, and market conditions to inform underwriting strategies.
- Maintain a high level of documentation accuracy and compliance with internal processes.
Qualifications
- 3-7+ years of experience in excess casualty or commercial casualty underwriting (carrier or MGA/MGU experience welcome).
- Strong technical knowledge of casualty lines, including general liability, products liability, and umbrella/excess structures.
- Existing broker relationships within the Midwest preferred.
- Ability to interpret complex risk information and make disciplined underwriting decisions.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
