Director, Investment Accountant

The Director of Investment Accounting will play a critical leadership role in managing the accounting and reporting for the company's investment portfolio. This position ensures compliance with GAAP and Statutory (STAT) accounting standards, oversees internal controls, and delivers accurate and timely financial reporting. The role requires strong technical expertise, analytical skills, and the ability to lead a team in a dynamic environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the accounting and reporting for all investment activities, including bonds, equities, derivatives, and alternative investments.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and STAT requirements for investment accounting and financial reporting.
  • Manage the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including investment schedules for regulatory filings.
  • Lead the investment close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Collaborate with Treasury, FP&A, and external auditors to support audits and regulatory examinations.
  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls over investment accounting processes.
  • Provide technical guidance on complex investment transactions and new accounting standards.
  • Identify and drive process improvements, automation, and system enhancements to increase efficiency.
  • Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or equivalent designation strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in investment accounting within insurance or financial services.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and STAT accounting principles and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Experience with investment accounting systems and ERP platforms (e.g., Oracle, SAP).
  • Proven leadership skills with experience managing teams and cross-functional projects.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
