Responsibilities

Benefits Consultant Role Overview

The Health & Welfare Benefits Consultant develops and manages client relationships, leads consulting activities, coordinates internal teams, and contributes to firm development. Key responsibilities include:


Manage Client Relationships

  • Build strong, effective working relationships with client organizations
  • Understand client issues, anticipate needs, and identify strategic solutions
  • Attend regularly scheduled client meetings
  • Collaborate with external partners such as administrators, attorneys, auditors, and other service providers
  • Present complex concepts in clear, actionable terms

Lead Consulting Activities

  • Oversee project management for ongoing and special initiatives
  • Coordinate internal consulting teams on assigned client projects
  • Provide innovative, strategic insights regarding trends and emerging issues in the employee benefits industry
  • Manage relationships with carriers, vendors, and benefit providers, including contract and renewal negotiations

Manage and Grow Business

  • Oversee client revenue, budget management, and profitability
  • Partner internally to ensure clients can access the full range of available services
  • Build and maintain influential client relationships and professional networks
  • Lead or participate in business development efforts with existing and prospective clients

Professional and Firm Development

  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development
  • Contribute to team and firmwide meetings
  • Mentor and support junior staff
  • Assist with special internal projects or initiatives

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective presentation and facilitation skills (in‑person and virtual)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Demonstrated relationship‑building and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Proficiency in common business software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams)
  • Strong understanding of financial reports, renewals, annual cost projections, and ability to perform high‑level reasonableness reviews

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in employee benefits consulting or a related professional services setting, with exposure to health plan strategy, design, and implementation
  • Experience with multiemployer and/or public sector health and welfare plans
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience
  • Relevant insurance licensing; CEBS and/or actuarial credentials are a plus

Location & Travel

This position is based in the Southern California region, with flexibility for remote work within the area. Ability to attend in‑person client and internal meetings is required. Business travel may be up to 15%.
