Position Overview

A well‑established life insurance organization is looking for an Assistant Controller with extensive experience in life insurance accounting. This role is responsible for supporting both GAAP and statutory (SAP) reporting within a highly regulated insurance environment and plays a critical role in maintaining accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across financial and regulatory reporting functions.

The Assistant Controller will act as a technical resource for life insurance accounting matters, collaborating closely with senior leadership, auditors, and regulatory bodies. The ideal candidate will bring a hands‑on leadership approach, strong accounting expertise, and proven experience managing statutory reporting and audits unique to life insurance operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee monthly and quarterly close activities for a life insurance entity, ensuring accurate GAAP and statutory financial reporting.
  • Maintain compliance with life insurance statutory accounting requirements, including regulatory filings and required disclosures.
  • Track, interpret, and implement new accounting pronouncements and regulatory guidance impacting life insurance companies.
  • Review financial results and provide analysis of key drivers specific to life insurance operations.
  • Prepare and manage short‑term cash flow and liquidity projections to support insurance operations and investment activity.
  • Ensure alignment and consistency across GAAP and SAP schedules, statements, and footnote disclosures.
  • Act as a key point of contact for external auditors and regulators, coordinating audits and responding to examination requests.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance processes, controls, and reporting efficiency within the accounting function.
  • Collaborate with the Controller on developing and strengthening accounting policies, procedures, and governance practices.
  • Assist with special projects, regulatory initiatives, and ad‑hoc financial analyses as required.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation (required)

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience within the life insurance industry
  • Direct responsibility for GAAP and statutory reporting in a life insurance environment
  • Demonstrated experience leading accounting teams and managing close processes in a regulated setting

Technical Skills & Competencies

  • In‑depth knowledge of life insurance GAAP and statutory accounting, including statutory guidance and audited statutory financial statements
  • Strong understanding of insurance regulatory reporting and examination standards
  • Advanced Excel proficiency, including pivot tables, lookup formulas, and analytical modeling
  • Experience with enterprise general ledger systems and reporting/forecasting tools such as INFOR, Prophix, or similar platforms
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving abilities
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a compliance‑focused environment
