Director of Engineering, Investment Data & Analytics | Boston
We're looking for a highly hands-on technical leader who loves to code, gravitates toward analytical problems, and wants to help build a data and analytics function in a fast-moving, startup-style environment.
What You'll Do
- Own the design and delivery of pipelines and data models across complex financial and economic datasets.
- Build reliable and secure cloud data systems supporting investment, fund, and portfolio workflows.
- Partner directly with investment and research teams to turn ambiguous business problems into working technical solutions.
- Establish standards for data quality, lineage, observability, testing, and reliability.
- Lead architecture, design, and code reviews while raising the engineering bar across the team.
- Mentor engineers and lead through technical credibility and example.
- Help rethink not only the underlying technology, but also how data and technology can improve investment processes and operating workflows.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of experience across software engineering, data engineering, or related disciplines.
- An exceptional coder who is excited to remain deeply hands-on.
- Strong Python and SQL skills with experience building and operating production data platforms.
- Experience with technologies such as Snowflake or equivalent cloud warehouses, dbt, Dagster/Airflow, and cloud data tooling.
- Strong understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT, data quality, testing, and production systems.
- Excellent critical thinking, reasoning, and independent problem-solving abilities.
- A product mindset with the ability to understand the business problem behind what you're building.
- Someone who naturally gravitates toward data, analytics, data science, and analytically complex engineering problems.
- Low ego, collaborative, and comfortable operating with significant autonomy.
- Experience in a startup, private equity, investment management, or similarly high-ownership environment is particularly attractive.
The Environment
The Investment Data & Analytics organization works alongside investors and quantitative researchers on problems ranging from the digitization of unstructured data to systematic monitoring of private equity portfolios.
The team operates with a flat, agile, startup-style mentality. This is an environment for engineers who want to build, question assumptions, understand the domain deeply, and ultimately see their technology used by the business.
📍 Boston, MA | 3-4 days onsite
💰 Base Salary: $220K-$230K + discretionary annual bonus
