Director, Carbon Origination & Sales (EU ETS)

The Opportunity
A leading global financial institution is seeking a Director-level Carbon Originator to join its Corporate Derivatives Sales team in Amsterdam.
This role will focus on originating, structuring and delivering carbon market solutions to corporate clients across Europe, with a particular emphasis on EU Emissions Allowances (EUAs) and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The position sits within a broader Financial Markets and Derivatives platform, working closely with Sales, Trading, Structuring and Research teams to provide clients with sophisticated risk management and decarbonisation solutions.
The successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of carbon markets, a proven track record in business development and client origination, and a genuine long-term commitment to environmental commodities as a career focus.
Key Responsibilities
- Originate and develop new carbon market business opportunities with corporate and institutional clients.
- Act as a trusted advisor on carbon compliance and risk management solutions.
- Drive commercial growth across:
- EU Emissions Allowances (EUAs)
- EU ETS compliance solutions
- Carbon hedging strategies
- Decarbonisation-related derivatives solutions
- Build and manage relationships with:
- Industrial companies
- Energy producers
- Utilities
- Commodity-intensive corporates
- Trading firms
- Financial institutions
- Identify opportunities arising from regulatory developments within European carbon markets.
- Partner closely with Trading and Structuring teams to develop innovative client solutions.
- Deliver market insights on EUA fundamentals, pricing dynamics and regulatory developments.
- Lead strategic discussions with senior decision-makers including CFOs, Treasurers, Procurement Heads and Risk Managers.
- Participate in industry events and conferences to strengthen market presence and expand commercial networks.
- Contribute to the continued growth of the environmental products franchise across Europe.
Candidate Profile
Essential Requirements
- Minimum 7 year's experience in carbon origination, sales, trading, environmental products, emissions markets or related commodity markets.
- Strong knowledge of:
- EU ETS
- EUA markets
- Carbon pricing mechanisms
- Emissions compliance frameworks
- Proven track record of generating revenue through client origination, business development and relationship management.
- Established network across European corporates, utilities, industrial and energy market participants.
- Strong commercial mindset with a client-first approach.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to engage credibly with senior corporate decision-makers.
- Demonstrated long-term commitment to carbon markets, sustainability-linked products or environmental commodities.
- Ability to originate, structure and execute complex client solutions.
Preferred Experience
- Carbon sales experience within a bank, commodity trading house, utility, broker, exchange or environmental markets participant.
- Knowledge of derivatives and hedging solutions.
- Experience working closely with trading, structuring and research teams.
- Understanding of wider environmental products including:
- Guarantees of Origin (GOs)
- Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
- Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs)
- Renewable fuels and sustainability products
- Additional European language skills would be advantageous.
