Position Overview
The Senior Field Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating, selecting, and pricing complex commercial property risks across a defined territory. This role requires a deep understanding of property exposures, risk mitigation strategies, and market dynamics. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned underwriter with strong broker relationships, technical acumen, and the ability to make sound underwriting decisions in the field.
This is a client-facing, field-based role that combines underwriting discipline with relationship management. You'll be empowered to make decisions, collaborate with distribution partners, and contribute to the profitability and growth of the property book.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk Evaluation & Selection: Analyze complex commercial property submissions, including COPE data, loss history, engineering reports, and CAT modeling outputs.
- Underwriting Authority: Exercise delegated authority to quote, bind, and renew accounts within established guidelines.
- Broker Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale and retail brokers, ensuring clear communication of underwriting appetite and guidelines.
- Portfolio Management: Monitor performance of the assigned book, identify trends, and recommend corrective actions to maintain profitability.
- Field Presence: Conduct on-site visits, inspections, and meetings with clients and brokers to assess risks and strengthen partnerships.
- Collaboration: Work closely with risk control, claims, actuarial, and product teams to develop tailored solutions for complex risks.
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all underwriting decisions are well-documented and compliant with internal and regulatory standards.
- Market Intelligence: Stay informed on industry trends, competitor activity, and emerging risks to inform underwriting strategy.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, preferably in a field-based role.
- Strong knowledge of property forms, CAT exposures (wind, flood, quake), construction types, and valuation methodologies.
- Proven ability to underwrite mid-market to large accounts, including layered and shared programs.
- Established broker relationships and a reputation for responsiveness and professionalism.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field; CPCU, ARM, or AU designations preferred.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to travel within the assigned territory as needed.
