Position Overview
The Lead Middle Market Field Underwriter plays a critical role in driving profitable growth within the middle market commercial segment. This position combines technical underwriting expertise with strategic relationship management, serving as a trusted advisor to agency partners and internal stakeholders. The role is field-based and requires travel within an assigned territory.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwriting Excellence: Evaluate, select, and price complex middle market risks across multiple lines of business, ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Agency Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong partnerships with independent agents, delivering responsive service and consultative support to drive mutual success.
- Portfolio Management: Monitor and manage the performance of assigned book of business, identifying trends, opportunities, and corrective actions.
- Collaboration & Leadership: Mentor junior underwriters, contribute to team development, and collaborate cross-functionally with claims, risk services, and product teams.
- Market Intelligence: Stay informed on industry trends, competitive landscape, and regulatory changes to inform underwriting decisions and strategy.
- Field Presence: Represent Our Client at agency visits, industry events, and client meetings, promoting brand visibility and market engagement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, insurance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum 5-7 years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably in middle market.
- Strong knowledge of property and casualty insurance products and underwriting principles.
- Proven ability to analyze complex risks and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to travel within assigned territory (up to 50%).
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional designations such as CPCU, CIC, or ARM.
- Experience with agency management and strategic planning.
- Proficiency in underwriting systems and data analytics tools.
