Field Underwriter, Middle Market Commercial Insurance

Location: Tennessee (Remote with regional travel)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $130,000 - $200,000

About the Role

Our client is seeking a skilled and strategic Field Underwriter to support their Middle Market Commercial Insurance operations in Tennessee. This role is responsible for evaluating and underwriting complex commercial risks, conducting field assessments, and fostering strong relationships with agency partners. The ideal candidate will bring deep market knowledge, technical underwriting expertise, and a consultative approach to risk selection and pricing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwriting & Risk Selection: Evaluate and underwrite middle market commercial accounts across various industries, including property, general liability, auto, and workers' compensation.
  • Field Assessments: Conduct on-site visits to assess physical risks, validate exposures, and ensure underwriting accuracy.
  • Agency Relationship Management: Serve as a trusted advisor to agency partners, providing guidance on risk appetite, underwriting strategy, and account placement.
  • Portfolio Management: Maintain a profitable book of business by adhering to underwriting guidelines, pricing models, and loss control recommendations.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams including loss control, claims, and actuarial to ensure holistic risk evaluation and account servicing.
  • Market Intelligence: Monitor regional market trends, competitor activity, and regulatory developments to inform underwriting decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably in middle market or field roles.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial lines products and underwriting principles.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in underwriting platforms and CRM tools.
  • Ability to travel within Tennessee (up to 30%).

Preferred Attributes

  • Designations such as CPCU, CIC, AU, or ARM.
  • Experience with risk mitigation strategies and loss control integration.
  • Proven ability to manage complex accounts and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Strong business acumen and customer-centric mindset.
