Data Center Engineer
Location: New Jersey (On‑site / Data Center)
Overview
An elite trading firm is seeking a highly motivated Data Center Engineer to support the mission critical infrastructure of their trading operations. This role is hands on and on‑site, focused on maintaining high performance, low latency data center environments where uptime, precision, and speed are paramount.
What you'll do:
- Perform hands‑on installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of server, storage, and network hardware in production data center environments
- Rack, stack, cable, and decommission equipment in accordance with data center standards and firm best practices
- Diagnose hardware failures and coordinate RMAs with vendors; replace components such as disks, power supplies, memory, NICs, and motherboards
- Use Linux command‑line tools to troubleshoot system issues, validate hardware health, and support operational tasks
- Run and modify scripts (e.g., Bash or Python) for diagnostics, automation, and deployment support
- Support low‑latency trading infrastructure by ensuring optimal physical layout, cabling, and hardware health
- Manage structured cabling (fiber and copper), labeling, and documentation
- Maintain accurate asset inventory and track hardware lifecycle
- Work closely with network, systems, and trading technology teams to support deployments and incidents
- Coordinate with colocation providers and remote hands as needed
- Participate in scheduled maintenance windows and respond to urgent production issues as required
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in a data center, NOC, or hardware‑focused infrastructure role
- Proven hardware repair and break/fix experience with enterprise servers and networking equipment
- Strong Linux command‑line skills, including troubleshooting, log analysis, and system validation
- Experience running and supporting scripts for operational or diagnostic purposes
- Solid understanding of server components, BIOS/firmware, and physical networking concepts
- Experience with racking, cabling, power distribution, and cooling considerations
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware and OS‑level issues under time pressure in production environments
- Comfortable working on‑site and performing physical tasks (lifting and moving equipment up to ~50 lbs)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting financial services or trading infrastructure
- Basic scripting experience (Bash, Python, or similar)
- Experience working in colocation data centers
- Knowledge of fiber optics, transceivers, and structured cabling standards
- Relevant certifications (CompTIA, Cisco, or vendor‑specific hardware certs)
