Commerical Actuary
We're working with a high-growth startup in the health insurance space that is building out its actuarial and underwriting function from the ground up. This is a unique opportunity to join early, work closely with senior leadership, and play a key role in shaping pricing strategy, underwriting approach, and overall business growth.
Key responsibilities:
- Evaluate and price commercial group health insurance risk, balancing competitiveness with profitability
- Analyze claims experience to identify trends, cost drivers, and risk factors
- Partner with sales teams in competitive situations to support deal strategy
- Interpret clinical and claims data to distinguish catastrophic vs. chronic conditions and identify outliers
- Help build underwriting guidelines, pricing strategies, and internal processes as the company scales
- Ensure regulatory compliance and maintain clear documentation
- Communicate underwriting decisions to brokers and internal stakeholders
What they're looking for:
- ASA or FSA required
- 5+ years of commercial group health underwriting experience (no Medicare, Medicaid, or ACA)
- Experience partnering with sales teams in competitive environments
- Strong ability to analyze complex claims and clinical data and translate insights into decisions
- Large group, fully insured experience preferred
- Strong communication skills and commercial mindset
