Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Renewable Energy Credit (REC) Originator to join a growing power and environmental commodities trading team. This individual will be responsible for originating, structuring, and executing REC transactions with utilities, corporate buyers, renewable developers, brokers, and other market participants. The role will focus on developing new client relationships, expanding existing business, and supporting the trading desk through market intelligence and deal flow generation across voluntary and compliance environmental markets.
The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of renewable energy markets, sustainability initiatives, and environmental commodities, along with a proven ability to identify and execute commercial opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Originate and execute REC transactions across voluntary and compliance markets.
- Develop and maintain relationships with renewable energy developers, corporate sustainability teams, utilities, aggregators, brokers, and institutional counterparties.
- Structure customized environmental commodity solutions to meet client sustainability, regulatory, and renewable energy procurement objectives.
- Collaborate closely with traders to identify market opportunities and optimize pricing and risk management strategies.
- Maintain a robust pipeline of origination opportunities and manage transactions through execution.
- Analyze REC market fundamentals, supply and demand dynamics, regulatory developments, and emerging environmental products.
- Negotiate term sheets, contracts, and transaction documentation with counterparties.
- Monitor state Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), voluntary market trends, and carbon reduction initiatives.
- Support the growth of related environmental products including carbon offsets, PPAs, bundled renewable products, and other clean energy solutions.
- Represent the company at industry conferences, trade events, and client meetings to expand market presence.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Energy, Environmental Sciences, Business, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in REC origination, environmental commodities, power marketing, renewable energy development, energy sales, or a related commercial role.
- Strong understanding of REC markets, Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), and corporate sustainability programs.
- Established industry network within renewable energy, utilities, corporate procurement, or environmental markets is preferred.
- Proven track record of originating and closing transactions.
- Excellent commercial, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
- Strong analytical capabilities and understanding of commodity market fundamentals.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial trading environment.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with voluntary and compliance REC markets including PJM GATS, M-RETS, WREGIS, ERCOT, and NAR registries.
- Knowledge of carbon markets, renewable natural gas (RNG), low-carbon fuels, or broader environmental commodity products.
- Experience working alongside trading desks, risk management teams, and legal/compliance functions.
- Familiarity with long-term renewable energy procurement structures and PPAs.
