PJM Power Analyst
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated PJM Power Analyst to support power trading, market analysis, and commercial decision-making within the PJM wholesale electricity market. The ideal candidate will possess a strong quantitative background, a deep understanding of power market fundamentals, and experience analyzing transmission, congestion, generation, load, and market pricing dynamics. This individual will work closely with traders, originators, and risk teams to identify market opportunities and provide actionable insights that drive profitability and risk management.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze PJM market fundamentals including load, generation, outages, fuel markets, transmission constraints, congestion, and weather impacts.
- Develop and maintain power market models to forecast nodal and zonal energy prices, congestion, basis, and ancillary service markets.
- Monitor day-ahead and real-time market activity to identify trading opportunities and emerging market trends.
- Conduct transmission and congestion analysis utilizing tools such as PowerWorld, Dayzer, PROMOD, PLEXOS, or similar platforms.
- Track PJM capacity market developments, RPM auctions, interconnection queues, generator retirements, and policy changes.
- Perform quantitative analysis of FTRs, virtuals, spreads, basis positions, and other structured power products.
- Create recurring market reports and communicate key findings to trading, commercial, and management teams.
- Collaborate with traders to evaluate new strategies and support position management activities.
- Analyze historical market data and develop automated reporting and analytical tools.
- Stay current on PJM market rules, stakeholder processes, regulatory developments, and operational changes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Energy Management, or a related quantitative field.
- 2-7+ years of experience in power markets, energy trading, market analytics, utility planning, or energy consulting.
- Strong understanding of PJM market structure, transmission systems, congestion drivers, and power market fundamentals.
- Experience working with large datasets and analytical tools such as SQL, Python, R, VBA, MATLAB, or similar technologies.
- Familiarity with market modeling platforms including Dayzer, PROMOD, PLEXOS, Aurora, PowerWorld, or equivalent tools.
- Advanced Excel and data visualization skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced trading environment and synthesize complex market information into actionable insights.
