Controller
Position Overview
Our client, a well-established and highly respected life and annuity insurance organization, is seeking a strategic and technically strong Controller to join its finance leadership team. This is a highly visible role with a clear succession path to the Chief Financial Officer position, offering a unique opportunity to influence the financial direction of the organization while partnering closely with executive leadership.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in insurance accounting and financial reporting, combined with a proactive mindset for process improvement, innovation, and organizational growth. This individual will be instrumental in leading corporate accounting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and finance transformation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting
- Oversee the preparation and delivery of timely, accurate financial statements in accordance with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and GAAP.
- Lead all quarterly and annual reporting processes, including management, board, regulatory, and external stakeholder reporting.
- Ensure compliance with insurance regulatory requirements and maintain strong relationships with auditors and regulatory bodies.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
Leadership & Strategic Finance
- Serve as a key advisor to senior leadership on financial, accounting, and operational matters.
- Partner with the CFO and executive team to support strategic planning, capital management, growth initiatives, and business decision-making.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and development opportunities for the accounting and finance teams.
- Build scalable processes and controls to support future organizational growth.
Process Improvement & Innovation
- Identify opportunities to streamline financial reporting and accounting processes through automation and technology solutions.
- Lead finance transformation initiatives that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making capabilities.
- Evaluate and implement best practices across financial operations, controls, and reporting frameworks.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Maintain and strengthen internal control environments and corporate governance standards.
- Coordinate external audits and regulatory examinations.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable accounting standards, insurance regulations, and company policies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA designation required.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience within the insurance industry.
- Strong expertise in life insurance and/or annuity accounting and reporting.
- Deep understanding of SAP, GAAP, statutory reporting, and insurance regulatory requirements.
- Proven leadership experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
