Legal Counsel - Claims/Financial Lines

We are seeking a highly skilled Corporate Counsel / Senior Claims Handler (m/f/d) to join our Financial Lines / D&O team in Munich or Cologne. In this key role, you will independently manage complex claims, make strategic coverage decisions, and act as a trusted partner to internal and external stakeholders. You will work closely with brokers, policyholders, external counsel, and colleagues across the business to ensure fair, timely, and accurate claims resolution while supporting our continued growth in the Financial Lines space.

Your Responsibilities

• Manage, assess, and resolve complex D&O and Financial Lines claims with a high degree of autonomy.
• Make well‑reasoned coverage and liability decisions while ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.
• Coordinate communication with all relevant stakeholders, including lawyers, experts, brokers, and insureds, ensuring transparency and professional guidance throughout the claims process.
• Collaborate with your team on large or sensitive loss scenarios, sharing insight and contributing to strategic case handling.
• Establish, maintain, and review damage reserves, ensuring accurate financial management of claims.
• Decide on claim payouts and oversee settlement negotiations where required.
• Prepare internal reports for major loss events to support management decision‑making and portfolio oversight.

Your Profile

• Fully qualified German lawyer (m/f/d) or holding an equivalent German‑language legal qualification (Austria/Switzerland).
• At least five years of experience in D&O, Financial Lines, Professional Indemnity, E&O, or other complex claims environments.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to explain complex coverage decisions clearly and confidently.
• Excellent communication, including the ability to simplify legal and technical issues for diverse stakeholders.
• High level of precision in reporting, data quality, and documentation, supporting KPI‑led claims management.
• Confident in negotiations and capable of defending positions in challenging claim scenarios.
• Fluent English skills; additional languages welcome.
