Role Summary
As the Private D&O Underwriter, you will be responsible for underwriting new and renewal business for privately held companies across a range of industries. You'll assess risk, negotiate terms, and build strong broker relationships while contributing to the strategic direction of the executive liability portfolio.
This is a high-visibility role with room for growth, creativity, and leadership. You'll work closely with the MGA's leadership team and have the opportunity to influence underwriting appetite, product design, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting Execution
- Underwrite private company D&O, EPL, Fiduciary, and Crime risks in accordance with delegated authority.
- Analyze financial statements, ownership structures, governance practices, and litigation history.
- Determine appropriate pricing, terms, and conditions based on risk profile and market dynamics.
- Maintain underwriting discipline while supporting broker responsiveness and deal flow.
Broker Engagement
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with retail and wholesale brokers across the U.S.
- Serve as a consultative resource for brokers on executive liability placements.
- Conduct broker meetings, webinars, and training sessions to promote the MGA's capabilities and appetite.
- Provide timely, thoughtful responses to broker inquiries and submissions.
Portfolio Management
- Monitor performance metrics including loss ratios, hit ratios, and premium growth.
- Collaborate with actuarial and analytics teams to refine underwriting strategy.
- Participate in quarterly portfolio reviews and contribute to strategic planning.
- Identify trends and emerging risks that may impact underwriting appetite or product design.
Product & Innovation
- Provide input on policy forms, endorsements, and coverage enhancements.
- Assist in the development of new products and underwriting tools tailored to private company exposures.
- Stay current on regulatory developments, litigation trends, and market shifts in executive liability.
Operational Excellence
- Ensure underwriting files are complete, accurate, and compliant with internal and external standards.
- Adhere to carrier-specific requirements and delegated authority agreements.
- Support internal audits and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Candidate Profile
We are seeking candidates who bring a blend of technical underwriting expertise, market insight, and relationship-building skills. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently, making decisions within authority, and contributing to a collaborative team culture.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience underwriting private company D&O and related executive liability lines.
- Strong understanding of financial statements, corporate governance, and private company exposures.
- Proven track record of profitable underwriting and broker relationship management.
- Familiarity with MGA operations, delegated authority frameworks, and carrier partnerships.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
- Bachelor's degree required; CPCU, RPLU, or other industry designations preferred.
