Commodities Research Analyst
We are seeking a highly analytical and driven Commodities Research Analyst to join a global quantitative investment team, with a focus on China's battery metals market. This role will be instrumental in generating actionable insights across the lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite value chains, supporting systematic trading strategies. The ideal candidate will combine deep domain knowledge of China's industrial and policy landscape with strong data handling and modeling capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-depth fundamental research on China's battery metals markets, including supply-demand dynamics, cost curves, production trends, inventory levels, and trade flows.
- Monitor and interpret macroeconomic, regulatory, and geopolitical developments impacting the EV and energy storage supply chains.
- Build and maintain proprietary databases and models to forecast price movements, production capacity, and consumption trends across upstream and downstream segments.
- Collaborate with data scientists and quant researchers to integrate fundamental insights into systematic signals and trading models.
- Engage with industry participants, including producers, refiners, traders, and government agencies, to validate assumptions and gather market intelligence.
- Produce high-quality research reports, dashboards, and presentations for internal portfolio managers and external stakeholders.
- Track and analyze policy shifts (e.g., subsidies, export controls, environmental regulations) and their implications for global battery metal flows.
- Support the development of new investment theses and contribute to cross-commodity and macro strategy discussions.
Requirements:
- 3-7 years of experience in commodities research, metals & mining, energy transition, or related sectors, ideally with exposure to China's industrial markets.
- Strong understanding of the battery metals ecosystem, including upstream mining, midstream refining, and downstream EV/ESS applications.
- Proficiency in Mandarin and English, with the ability to read and interpret Chinese regulatory documents, industry reports, and local news sources.
- Advanced Excel and data analysis skills; experience with Python, SQL, or other programming languages is a plus.
- Familiarity with market data platforms (e.g., Bloomberg, Wind, Mysteel, SMM) and government databases (e.g., NBS, MIIT).
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in economics, engineering, materials science, finance, or a related field.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to distill complex market dynamics into clear, actionable insights.
- Self-starter with a global mindset, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
