About the Opportunity
A leading E&S carrier is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Property Underwriting to join its growing Property division. This is a fully remote opportunity for an experienced property underwriting professional who thrives on evaluating complex risks, building broker relationships, and driving profitable growth within the non-admitted marketplace.
The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, including a strong background in E&S business. This individual will be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of middle market and large property risks while serving as a key production underwriter and market representative.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite new and renewal E&S Property business while maintaining profitability and portfolio management objectives.
- Evaluate complex property risks, including CAT-exposed accounts, large schedules, shared and layered programs, and difficult-to-place business.
- Analyze submissions, engineering reports, loss histories, financial statements, COPE data, and catastrophe modeling outputs.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers and key distribution partners.
- Negotiate pricing, coverage, limits, deductibles, and terms to achieve profitable growth objectives.
- Manage a portfolio of middle market and large property accounts across a broad range of industries.
- Exercise significant underwriting authority while ensuring compliance with company guidelines and risk appetite.
- Mentor junior underwriters and provide technical guidance on complex property risks.
- Collaborate with actuarial, claims, engineering, and product teams to support underwriting strategy and portfolio performance.
- Represent the company at industry events, broker meetings, and market-facing functions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- 8+ years of commercial property underwriting experience.
- Strong E&S Property underwriting experience required.
- Demonstrated experience underwriting:
- Commercial Property
- Shared & Layered Property Programs
- CAT-Exposed Risks
- Large Schedule Properties
- Manufacturing, Real Estate, Habitational, Hospitality, and Industrial Risks
- Experience working directly with wholesale brokerage partners.
- Strong understanding of catastrophe exposures, reinsurance considerations, and portfolio management.
- Proven ability to independently manage complex property accounts and negotiate large transactions.
- Strong analytical, communication, and relationship management skills.
Preferred Experience
- Carrier or MGA underwriting background.
- Authority handling accounts with premiums ranging from $100,000 to $5M+.
- Experience underwriting Tier 1 wind, earthquake, wildfire, and other CAT-prone exposures.
- CPCU, AU, ARM, or similar industry designations preferred.
- Previous leadership, mentoring, or management responsibilities.
