Senior Software Engineer / Technical Lead

Location: New York, NY (Hybrid)
Industry: Financial Technology / Investment Management
Employment Type: Full-Time

Overview

A globally recognized investment firm is seeking a Senior Software Engineer / Technical Lead to join a high-impact internal technology group. This team is responsible for building and evolving one of the firm's most strategically important platforms-an internal system that plays a critical role in how the organization operates, grows, and makes decisions.

This is not a typical engineering role. It's an opportunity to work at the intersection of technology, business strategy, and organizational design. You'll be entrusted with full ownership of a product that is central to the firm's long-term vision, and your work will be visible to senior leadership across the organization.

The Role

As a Senior Engineer and Technical Lead, you will be responsible for driving the development of a foundational internal product. This platform is deeply embedded in the firm's operating model and is undergoing a significant evolution-moving from a stable, cloud-native foundation toward a richer, more feature-complete ecosystem.

You'll work closely with stakeholders across multiple business units to understand nuanced workflows, identify gaps, and deliver solutions that are both technically elegant and operationally impactful. The role requires a strong product mindset, technical leadership, and the ability to navigate complex, high-sensitivity environments.

This is a full-stack role with a strong emphasis on backend engineering, cloud infrastructure, and user-facing design. You'll be expected to lead architecture decisions, mentor other engineers, and take ownership of the full software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and lead the development of a mission-critical internal platform used across the firm.
  • Own the full SDLC-from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, deployment, and iteration.
  • Collaborate directly with senior stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Deliver intuitive, performant user experiences with minimal external product or design support.
  • Evaluate and integrate third-party tools where appropriate, balancing proprietary development with strategic vendor adoption.
  • Contribute to long-term platform strategy, including roadmap planning, feature evolution, and technical modernization.
  • Apply emerging technologies, including AI and automation, to enhance platform capabilities and user experience.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Technical Expertise

  • Deep experience with Java as a core backend language.
  • Strong full-stack capabilities, including frontend development with modern frameworks (e.g., React, Javascript, TypeScript).
  • Familiarity with cloud-native architectures, preferably on Google Cloud Platform (GCP); AWS experience is also valued.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, and scalable microservices.
  • Exposure to workflow automation, internal tooling, or enterprise platforms is a plus.
  • Comfort with integrating third-party systems and evaluating build-vs-buy decisions.

Product & Business Acumen

  • Strong product orientation-able to understand business problems and design solutions that are intuitive and impactful.
  • Experience working with internal stakeholders across business, operations, and strategy.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and deliver in high-autonomy environments.
  • Maturity and discretion in handling sensitive data and high-visibility projects.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Proven ability to lead complex technical projects with cross-functional collaboration.
  • Comfortable mentoring other engineers and contributing to team culture.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Total Compensation Range: $500,000 - $800,000+
  • Includes base salary, performance bonus, and long-term upside
  • Compensation reflects the strategic importance and seniority of the role
  • Comprehensive benefits package and relocation support if needed
